Nature of business:
Montage von Anlagen und Maschinen für Dritte (privat label).
MDC Max Daetwyler AG was founded in 1943 in Dietikon-Zurich, Switzerland, by Mr. Max Daetwyler, MDC began servicing the printing industry with a range of diversified auxiliary equipment. After relocating to Bleienbach, Switzerland in 1954, the company also serviced the aviation industry in rebuilding airplanes and manufacturing spare parts for civilian and military aircrafts and the European Intelsat Zenith space program.
In 1964, the company increased their product range and designed and developed specific equipment, focusing on the gravure printing industry, while also continuing to service the civilian aircraft industry. Spurred by the rapid growth of the company, Peter Daetwyler, son of Max Daetwyler, started the US operation in New York in 1975 and this location became the service and sales organization in the United States. At that time, the company manufactured MDC Doctor Blades, installed and serviced equipment manufactured by the parent company in Switzerland.
A Southerly Move
With the steady, rapid growth of the US location and the desire to improve their ability to service their customers in the USA and Canada, the US corporate headquarters relocated to Huntersville, North Carolina in 1990. The company celebrated their grand opening with national, state and local government officials attending, plus customers and friends from Europe, Canada and North and South America.
Realizing the need for qualified technicians to service and to maintain their precision equipment, MDC pioneered a four-year machinist apprenticeship program at their Huntersville, North Carolina location in 1994. This program has been recognized by the North Carolina Department of Labor for excellence in achieving exceptional results in training as a Registered Apprenticeship Program. MDC also expanded their manufacturing capabilities to include a full service Machine Shop, offering high quality machined, fabricated or assembled parts. Along with the Engineering Department, which offers complete mechanical and electrical design and analysis for customers, including "turn-key project management", these services make it the ideal "one-stop shop" for customers.
Expanding Opportunities
In mid-2000, MDC formed a strategic alliance with Ohio Electronic Engravers, Inc. By combining the know-how, experience, and pioneering spirit of the two companies, Daetwyler is truly a single source for the printing industry, including gravure and flexo, illustration, packaging and specialy printing. Today, Daetwyler directs the engineering R &, D, manufacturing, sales and support for the products formerly produced by Ohio, such as electromechanical engravers.
In 2001, MDC and DKL Inc. introduced a new generation of lightweight cylinders. The new STARBASE cylinders represent a major cost-savings opportunity for gravure printers.
